Many of the online muscle-building gurus claim they are natural and drug-free.
But they’re lying.
Here’s a simple test you can use to determine if someone is secretly using steroids.
There are records of the height and weight of all Mr. America title holders from 1939 to 1969.
For example, the 1939 Mr. America was Bert Goodrich and he was 70.5 inches tall and weighed 195 pounds. The Mr. America winner in 1969 was Boyer Coe. He stood 69.0 inches tall and weighed 210 pounds.
Clearly those at the beginning of the time frame are most likely drug-free while after 1960 may have started experimenting with steroids and other unnatural substances.
But no matter. Because when we take the average height of all Mr. America winners over that 32 year period, we get an average height of 70 inches (5’10) and an average weight of 200 pounds. Remember, these are Mr. America champions, not your average gym rats.
So if someone is SIGNIFICANTLY bigger than these Mr. America champions of yesterday, they are probably using steroids.
Let me give you an example. The average weight divided by height of all the past Mr. America champions over this 32 year stretch is 2.875. (200lbs divided by 70 inches.)
I’m not going to name names here, but a recent bodybuilding champion stands 5’9 inches tall and weighs in at 275 pounds on contest day. If you divide 275 lbs by 69 inches, that’s almost 4.0 pounds per inch of height. Compared to the average of 2.875 from all bodybuilders of yesteryear.
Clearly, the modern-day bodybuilder in question is on drugs.
But let’s try another one. A reader recently asked me what I thought about a very famous online guru’s muscle-building program. This particular guru claims to be “completely drug-free” weighs 225 pounds at 6% body fat standing 6’0 tall.
Let’s run the numbers: 225 divided by 72 = 3.125
Hmmm… the average of all Mr. America champions from 1939 to 1969 was 2.857 pounds per inch of height but this “all-natural” guru clocks in at 3.125? Suspicious.
So what’s the cut-off?

In my personal opinion, I’d be skeptical of anyone who with weight/height ration of 3.0 or higher assuming they are lean (8% body fat or less.)
There might be a few genetic freaks out there who can break through this barrier naturally but most of the guys clocking in at 3.0 or above will most likely have used steroids at some point in the past.
So there you have it. Want to know if someone is using steroids? Take their weight in pounds divided by their height in inches. If it comes out to 3.0 or above…. be skeptical.
